Mack Breed, assistant coach, pleads guilty for planning Texas ref attack

As it says here.

On the one hand, it feels a little less than strict.  He doesn’t admit to planning the attack, but just to saying “that ref has to pay.”  Sorry, but there’s no way those kids could have planned such a coordinated attack like that without some coaching.  I don’t buy it.  I am certain he explicitly planned the hit.

On the other, I blanch a little when there’s any permanent consequences: he has to permanently give up his teaching license.  I’d like him to be able to teach (not coach) again if he shows contrition.

And, of course, he is still saying he was upset about “racist remarks and missed calls” by the official.  The very fact that he still sees fit to mention “missed calls” means that the racist remarks never happened.  If I (as a coach, player, or official) hear an official make racist remarks, I would instantly forget every poor call he made.  And Robert Watts, the referee, has been at it for 14 years and has never had even one sniff of a complaint against him for this kind of thing–not one coach, player, or partner has ever said he has ever done anything.  To believe he suddenly went racist-whacko in one night not only stretches the bounds of sensibility, it completely shatters it.

I will be intrigued to see what happens with the players: reports say they will be charged shortly.
